Fishing Report
l
Hot Creek
Lower Owens
07/10/09
The fishing on the lower river has been wide open.
We've been down there the last few weeks and it's
fishing great for most of the day. It's that time of year
when you ask yourself just how many fish do you need
to catch?  You'll find the usual winter bugs and maybe
even an early caddis or two.  The fish are keying on
midges in the morning and then switch to BWO's as
soon as the first few mayflies appear in the early
afternoon.  You should concentrate on nymphing with
indicators when no fish are rising and then try dries or
dry/dropper rigs as soon as you see consistent surface
activity.  Be sure to keep fishing when the BWO hatch
peters out, the fish will continue to eat midges until late
afternoon..

Fishing has been slow with cold water and lethargic
fish.  Look for fishing to improve as the weather and
water warms over the next few weeks.

Fishing is good to great as it usually is this time of year.
There is very little fishing pressure on the creek especially if
you take the time to hike into the canyon.  The most
productive time to fish has been late morning to mid-afternoon
during the warmest part of the day.  Expect to see your normal
February bugs, mostly midges and BWO's.  Nymphing with
dry/dropper or indicator techniques has been best when no
fish are rising.  Fish can be found eating midges and BWO's
on the surface in certain stretches of the creek so don't leave
your dries at home!        "DS"

The Ranch is beautiful in the winter if you want your own
place to fish with no crowds. The fishing can be really
good on some days but terrible on others this time of
year so you just got to take your chances.I will keep up
to date on this report after Feb 1st.          "SF"

Yesterday Drew, Gordon, and myself hit the river about 10:30
and had action right off the bat. Gordon guides on the lake
here but hasn't fly fished the river ever. Well Gordon caught
around 16 fish with a few 20+ in the mix nymphing while Drew
and I fished dries. Its really cool to see the way this river
changes every year . Fish are in a lot thinner water than in
years past at this time, and occupying many more runs. Its still
all about the midges but baetis are on the way. Don't let cabin
fever get ya, there's plenty of great fishin to be had in the
Eastern Sierras this time of year and Drew and I are on them
daily so give us a call if you have any questions or would like to
book a trip.                                      "SF"

Well fishing is great and getting better with more Baetis
showing every day. The water is thin and you will spook some
fish trying to get into a good position to cast but you will still
have plenty around that didn't spook. Still black midges seem
to work best , The best time is between 11:00 and 2:00. See
ya on the river.          "SF"
