2/19/12: Flows remain at normal winter levels and water temps are ranging from the low to upper 40's. The fishing has been excellent. Midges are hatching pretty regularly throughout the day and fish are eating them on top and subsurface. With the cool temps be sure to fish the slower water. The BWO's are just starting to get going but the midges outnumber 'em about 400 to 1. If you're fishing below the bridge be sure to try some stones as a point fly, the Skwalas are moving into the shallows and the fish are on them. RECOMMENDED FLIES: Poxyback Stone 8-12, Rubberleg Stone 8-12, Deep Blue Poison Tung 18-22, W.D.'s 18-22, Disco midge 20-22, Thread Midges 18-22, Rojo Midge 18-20, CDC Midge Emerger 18-20, Soft Hackle Midge Emerger 18-20, Hatching Midge 18-22, Silver Streak 18-20, San Juan Worm 12-14, Eggs 16-18, Rainbow Warroir 18-22, Pheasant Tail 18-22, Barr's BWO Emerger 16-18, Split Case BWO 16-18, Copper John 20-22, Griffith's Gnat 16-20, Buzzball 16-18, Kimball's Emerger 18-20, Sprout Midge 18-22, Parachute Adams 18-22, Sparkle Dun 18-22, Blue Dun 18-20.
2/19/12: Water temps have dropped back into the mid to upper 30's but the lower river is really starting to pick up. Stoneflies have begun their migration into the shallows and the move has not gone unnoticed by the trout. These stones wind up in the drift and provide the first big meal of the season. Midges and BWO's are also important this time of year so try one as a dropper behind a stone. There hasn't been much surface activity but this should change in the next few weeks with fish looking for adult stoneflies and BWO's. RECOMMENDED FLIES: Zebra Midge 18-22, Deep Blue Poison Tung 18-20, Silver Streak 18-20, W.D.'s 18-22, Miracle Nymph 18-20, Black Beauty 18-22, Barr's BWO Emerger 18-20, JuJu Baetis 18-20, Pheasant Tail 18-20, Poxyback Stone 10-12, Rubberleg Stone 8-12, S.J. 2/19/12: An excellent winter option, Hot Creek has been fishing great. Park at the gate and walk down as far as you want before fishing. The best action has been mid morning to early afternoon with things slowing down later in the day. Midges, BWO's and a few caddis are available but it's the mayflies that are really getting the fish going. Get down there now while the fish are still easy to fool! Use leaders tapering to 5x or 6x and try targeting actively feeding fish. RECOMMENDED FLIES: Brassie 18-22, Cardinal Midge 18-22, Disco Midge 18-20, W.D.'s 18-22, Pheasant Tail 16-20, Barr's Bwo Emerger 16-18, Brooks CDC Baetis Emerger 16-18, Juju Baetis 16-18, Grifiths Gnat 18-20, Sprout Midge 18-22, Parachute Adams 16-20, Bivisible Dun 16-20, Sparkle Dun 16-20, Thorax Dun 16-20.
12/01/11: Road closed for the winter season.
1/15/12: The upper river is still fishing well just be sure to cover lots of water. We've been seeing some nice lake fish in the system over the last month but they're spread out so keep moving to show your flies to as many fish as possible. Most of the big fish have been sitting in the deeper slow pools. It looks like our mild weather is about to change with high winds and some precip in the forecast. Fish are eating midges and a few caddis and mayflies. Most of the action has been subsurface, but don't leave your dries at home, you never know what you might see! RECOMMENDED FLIES: Zebra Midge 18-20, Deep Blue Poison Tung 18-20, Disco Midge 18-20, W.D. 18-20, Buckskin 16-18, Bird's Nest 16-18, San Juan Worm 12-14, Eggs 14-16, Parachute Adams 18-20, Sprout Midge 18-22, Griffiths Gnat 18-20.
1/15/12: The lower river has been fishing great but the flows just bumped up to almost 250 cfs. That's pretty high for this time of year and makes wading a little tougher. Hopefully the river comes back down to below 200 and we can get some good wade fishing access. Good hatches of midges throughout the day with a few mayflies and caddis in the afternoon. RECOMMENDED FLIES: W.D.'s 18-22, Zebra Midge 18-22, Deep Blue Poison Tung 18-20, Silver Streak 18-20, Rainbow Warrior 18-20, Buckskin 16-18, Barr's BWO Emerger 18-20, Copper John 18-22, Poxyback Golden Stone 12-14, Parachute Adams 18-20, Sprout Midge 18-22, Griffith's Gnat 18-20.
1/29/12: The recent storm has made for happy steelhead, The upper river has been packed due to off color water from Weaver creek down and high water. The fishing has been great. With the flows coming down every day and no serious weather for a while it should get really good. Winter fish are the target right now and are in the system. We've had some great days with the off color water bringing back the egg bite. February is gonna be my last month on the Trinity so if you want to come give it a try I still have some open dates. RECOMMENDED FLIES: Stones, Cj's , Pyscho Prince, Egg patterns , BH Birds nest, PTs, Rubber legs.
