SAN JOAQUIN

The Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River is one of the prettiest trout streams anywhere. It lies just over the shoulder of Mammoth Mountain. Flowing beneath the Minarets, the river offers unparalleled fishing for wild Rainbows, Browns, Brookies, and Golden/Rainbow hybrids. This classic freestone begins fishing well by July and continues to produce until they lock the gate in late October or November due to snow. This piece of water is another favorite of our guides and a perfect spot for the hopper-dropper combo.  Click here for current flows.

Whether you're an angler or not, this is a great place to explore. Red’s Meadow, Devil’s Postpile National Monument, Rainbow Falls and other sights along the San Joaquin River make this a wonderful place to fish, day hike, backpack or camp. Visitors return year after year to this beautiful area because there is always more to explore. During busy summer months, a mandatory shuttle bus and fee are required. This can be purchased at the Mammoth Adventure Center. If you are on a fly fishing guide trip with Andrew or Scott, they are permitted to drive into the area at any time without riding the shuttle and a small fee is required at the entrance gate. If this is your first time to Mammoth Lakes, you must see this area. It is absolutely breathtaking!
